The Greater Phoenix Jewish Coalition for Literacy is our Jewish community’s response to the overwhelming number of children in Phoenix area schools who do not read at grade level or do not have access to good school libraries. We recruit, train, place and support tutors who work with 1st through 3rd grade students in Valley schools.
School volunteers make a commitment based on their time and the students’ needs, usually one hour every week or every other week. The Coalition also supports Jewish day school/public school partnerships, bringing Jewish middle school and high school students to serve as “reading buddies” and mentors to younger children.
An on-going book collection of new and gently used books for children reading at kindergarten through eighth grade levels is also part of the program— providing at-risk children with access to books in their classrooms and school libraries.
